The History of Ballet

The history of Ballet is fascinating! It began in 15th century Italian Renaissance courts. Noble people of the era were treated to lavish parties for special occasions that included performances of music and dance which is where the style of dance originated. The style migrated to France where it was popularized and standardized by King Louie XIV through the 17th century.

In the early 19th century, classical ballets like, Giselle, and, La Sylphide, were created during the “Romantic Movement”. This movement influenced art, music and ballet. Later in the 19th century, Russians took the art form to new heights with, The Nutcracker, Sleeping Beauty, and Swan Lake. Everything from the complexity of the dance moves, to the costume design was taken to the extreme.

Today, Ballet still has deep Russian ties but is incredibly diverse both in style and execution from traditional narratives to the “plotless” and experimental.
