Myriad Music School in San Mateo believes every student can succeed with the right tools. Success-based lessons and purposeful home practice mean daily improvement. Students who love their music lessons and music teachers do take ownership of their progress. We take the time to understand each student’s needs and help them set their own goals, so children, teens, and adults can carry their music with them for life. Ages 6 – Adults, All Levels
Our private music lessons are one-on-one instruction with lesson lengths of 30 minutes, 45 minutes or 1 hour. For ages 12+, we recommend a 45 min lesson length. If you do not see a 45-minute or 60-minute open lesson time here, simply register for a 30-minute spot then call our friendly Arts Admin Team to inform them of your intention, and we’ll help adjust your schedule.
We teach all styles, including classical, jazz, contemporary, pop, and musical theater, along with songwriting skills. Students learn healthy, tension-free technique, music reading, theory, and smart practice strategies, while choosing their own fun projects along the way. Whether playing for personal enjoyment or pursuing a college-prep path, every student at Myriad progresses, gains confidence, and finds joy collaborating with their teacher each week.
All Private Music Lessons and Teams are year-round enrollment / 12 month classes. Your preferred lesson time is reserved for you, year-to-year. No need to re-register each time. Need to miss a lesson? It’s easy, with our make-up link. Sign-up for make-up lessons anytime. Make-up opportunities never expire, with continued active enrollment.

Beginners Ages 6-9: If you are a parent of a younger child, new to music lessons, explore the Piano Team, Guitar Team, and Violin Teams below. Teams provide a highly motivating format, combine private lessons and engaging team activities, all in one class.

Fun, Goal-Oriented Lessons
Your goals are emphasized along the way. Students in all programs receive leveled medals or certificates each spring for achieving skills in their progressive curriculum (similar to earning karate belts) These skills include completed method books, technique, rhythm skills, composing and improvising, and an emphasis in a style that the student chooses. Progress is measured by a checklist of skills a student should be able to demonstrate after that year of study to measure progress and keep parents informed.
100’s of Practice Videos created by Myriad teachers especially for our Students
Along with teaching our students how to become good readers with healthy, lasting piano technique, we provide as many tools as possible to engage happy, productive home practicers. We’ve created 100’s of practice videos for our students, recorded at slower practice tempos with a model of relaxed, tension-free hands and arms. Avoid going down the Youtube rabbit hole of poorly executed piano videos, tumbling along at speeds that mislead impressionable students. Learn alongside these Myriad videos, a great practice aid for our late elementary – late intermediate students.
Performances for All Levels
Performances are optional at our school, but highly encouraged. Setting goals is important to growth for all musicians, all ages, all levels. Above all, students are well-cared for as they progress through our performance levels. There’s something for everyone, from the shy student to the ambitious performers who love to be on stage! Students have the opportunity to perform in over 40 informal and formal concerts held over the course of the school year. Younger, elementary students love our small, casual Playing Parties. Intermediate and advanced students showcase their skills in formal concerts at off-site venues. We offer a special informal Beginner Musicians & Singers performance-practice classes for older elementary-level students who have just started an instrument and feel more comfortable sharing with a small group of peers.
We help private music lesson students prepare for all of these events through our highly successful workshop classes, held twice a year.
