Ages 6 – 9: Guitar Teams
Popular Class Recommendation for Beginners
Many of our beginning pianists, ages 6-9, thrive in our Guitar Teams classes, which are small classes with 2-3 students, together with 1 teacher. Guitar Teams blend individual instruction with group activities in music theory and collaboration. Team students progress at the same pace as Private Lesson students, then typically transition into Private Lessons around age 9-10. Guitar Team students demonstrate strong engagement in class and success with home practice assignments between lessons in this popular team + private focus format.
Ages 3-5: Myriad’s Smart Music Foundations
Questions about a child younger than Age 6?
Q: My child is 5 or younger, or on the early side of age 6. Should they start private guitar or ukulele lessons?
A: We recommend starting with one of our three popular pre-guitar / ukulele foundations programs for children under 6, designed to build the fine motor skills and music literacy foundations needed before private lessons begin..
Children ages 6+ are typically better equipped to:
- Read music notation independently
- Take on gentle, independent daily practice, which is essential for progress
For children ages 3-5 (or on the early side of age 6), Music Foundations Classes are the smart first step, prioritizing enjoyment, engagement, and early success, while also learning notes, rhythms, ear-training, musical collaboration, and the fine-motor skills needed to play an instrument. From there, students thrive moving into Guitar Teams or Private Guitar and Ukulele Lessons.

What is the right age to start guitar lessons?
Typically a student would start guitar lessons before the age of 8 because of smaller hand size and developing fine motor / coordination skills. Therefore, best practice suggests that students ages 6-8 begin with a junior sized guitar or ukulele. We recommend first registering for either Guitar Team or Kids’ Ukulele Band here at Myriad to get a great beginning with solid foundations. Additionally, consistent home practice is the other magical component to doing well with guitar, bass, or ukulele lessons.</span?
Our motivating systems are unique
We teach foundations and then show our students how to develop rock/blues riffs, classical technique, or song-writing skills. In addition, students at our school earn medals as they progress through our well-designed curriculum. In conclusion, we have been refining our curriculum over the past 26 years making it better and more relevant to our students’ goals every year!
