The piano teachers at the Myriad Music School in San Mateo believe that every child can succeed given the right tools. Success-based piano lessons and purposeful home practice means that our pianists improve daily, LOVE the piano and take ownership of their success! These are the young musicians who take music with them for the rest of their lives, in whatever capacity is right for them. We take the time to listen to the needs of our students, and help them set their goals.

Our school offers piano lessons for students of all ages and abilities from beginners to very advanced students. We offer every style of piano lessons from classical to jazz and pop. We have students who enjoy setting fun goals and hearing their improvements from year to year and also students who are serious about pursuing a high level of pianistic proficiency. Some of our music students are seeking to play their favorite movie themes, and some students are seeking to be music majors eventually at a university or conservatory level. All are welcome! Our students earn medals for each level they complete in a well-thought out curriculum that is unique to our school. As we have many teachers on staff we are able to match students with a teacher that works best with their particular age, ability and interest. We start private piano lessons from age 6 onwards. Before age 6 we recommend our Piano Team program or our Piano Prep Music for the Young Child curriculum. Our piano lessons are all private one-on-one instruction and lesson lengths are 30 minutes, 45 minutes or 1 hour. While our piano lessons are all private, parents are more than welcome to sit in on their child’s lessons.

Piano Lessons Build Life Skills

We believe that the greatest gift we can give our students is the ability to become their own teachers. We know we are doing our job right when students practice and problem solve on their own, with little prompting from their parents. They look forward to the improvements they see each day.

Performance Opportunities include:

Workshop Week – Small performance coaching classes
2 annual Concerts- Intermediate/Advanced levels
Playing Parties – For young beginners and elementary level students
Piano Lesson lengths range from 30 minutes to 1 hour, once a week.
Students who wish to participate in an exam program are selected by both the directors and the teacher for exceptional practice and work habits. These students must be in their 2nd year at Myriad to be considered. We participate in a National Examination Program, with in-house evaluations.

~ Healthy Keyboard Technique at the Myriad Music School

Unlike most other piano studios, we teach our students know how to avoid common repetitive stress injuries while practicing. Injury-free Body Balance guidelines are a special feature of piano lessons at the Myriad Music School. In our piano department, special emphasis is placed on teaching the building blocks of a virtuosic technique, free of tension and limitations – whether you’re a 6-year-old beginner or advanced, college-level pianist! Our Director is a specialist in integrated alignment when it comes to piano ergonomics, and all of our teachers receive this special training. We dispense with dogmatic ideas of curled fingers, placing 5 fingers over five keys, holding “balls” under hands, or putting coins on hands to prevent natural up/down movement; these concepts, from the outset, create tension and rigidity which limit speed and ease, and ultimately make it impossible to develop a virtuosic technique.

In fact, these are misguided attempts at describing what a truly virtuosic pianist does when playing! Instead, our teaching is rooted in the natural anatomy, alignment, and movement of the fingers, hands, and arms.

In lieu of curled fingers or placing fingers over five keys that immediately causes tension-inducing stretching, we help students find their natural hand shape; instead of “balls” held under the hand, we help students develop an awareness of their knuckles and wrist, and where these parts should be for ease, ergo optimal playing; instead of limiting hand movement, we encourage it as proper movement of the hand and arm make it possible for the fingers lift and drop into the key without tension! This approach combines body work principles prescribed by the Balance Center with techniques from the Taubman Approach. Many pianists following the guidelines prescribed by the Myriad Music School have found relief from discomfort and tension at the piano. The results include increased virtuosity and beautiful tone.
