Dancing for Self Expression
Over the next few weeks, discuss with your child what they love about dance. What are their favorite dance moves? How about their favorite songs to dance to? And perhaps most importantly, how does dancing make them feel? One of the best and most beneficial things about dance is how it helps children understand and communicate their emotions.
The dance floor is a safe and secure place for emotional expression and learning. Different movements, sounds, and facial expressions in dance connect to different emotions. When children make these connections, their ability to integrate their emotions with their dancing improves. But that’s not all!
By providing children with an outlet to openly explore and process their feelings, dancing helps lead them to greater confidence in themselves and their dancing. Talking about what your child loves about dancing and why will help foster a lifelong passion and appreciation for it. Multiple studies have shown a clear connection between the emotional growth gained through dance, and a heightened sense of self-esteem and overall life satisfaction!
Getting your child talking and thinking about why they enjoy dance will help them experience its mental and emotional benefits at a greater level. Also, it will help energize and motivate them for when classes start up again this autumn!
